The ability of passenger information display specialist Infotec to provide innovative and flexible solutions has been demonstrated by work recently completed at Newcastle Central Station.

The £8.1m modernisation of the station by East Coast and Network Rail has seen a range of improvements and additions, such as a freestanding main train departures and arrivals display board and an advertising screen. At a total length of 20m, it is the largest freestanding display created by Infotec.

What makes it really stand out is the inclusion of a JCDecaux Transvision screen. Infotec engineers designed the support structure for the main board, within which they included a frame to accommodate the high-tech advertising medium.

The main board is only one part of the total work undertaken by Infotec at this East Coast Main Line station.

A pedestrian-only portico has been added at the front of the building, for which Infotec designed and supplied six support posts used to carry CCTV, speakers and ticket machines at their base, as well as a dozen Infotec departures and arrival summary displays. Last year, Infotec created similar displays for Nottingham Station.

Displays for use in retail premises, designed to keep customers relaxed and up-to-date as they use the station, have also been provided in Newcastle.

East Coast property and projects director Tim Hedley-Jones said: "The provision of clear and accurate information is a high priority for us, and the new displays at Newcastle form an important part of this.

"The inclusion of digital advertising screens at this key gateway to the city of Newcastle and the wider North East region offers businesses an excellent commercial opportunity to reach a large and diverse marketplace."

Infotec worked in partnership with Fone-Alarm Installations (FAI) in Newcastle with the project being completed on schedule, despite a tight time frame, and within budget.

The work at Newcastle follows transformation of another heritage station building in which Infotec passenger information displays have been used, London’s King’s Cross.

Infotec’s products and technology are used to provide display solutions at overground and underground stations and on metro and bus systems. The company currently has more than 8,000 displays installed in more than 1,000 UK stations and an increasing number of locations overseas, including Mexico and the US.
