Denver Regional Transportation District (RTD) in the US has inaugurated the 2.3-mile extension of the E, F and R light-rail lines.

The extension, known as the Southeast Rail Extension during construction, brings light-rail services to Lone Tree city and adds three stations to the network.

The project was delivered by Balfour Beatty under an earlier signed contract with RTD. Design and construction work for the extension began in 2016.

Overall, the $233.1m project extends the E, F and R lines further southeast from Lincoln Station, with three stations at Sky Ridge, Lone Tree City Centre and Ridgegate Parkway.

It also adds 1,300 parking spaces at the Ridgegate Parkway Station.

The project received $92m from the Federal Transit Administration Small Starts funding programme, $9.4m from Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality grant funds, and $25m from the City of Lone Tree and other local stakeholders.

Balfour Beatty US rail division vice-president Roger Wilson said: “The grand opening of the extended E, F and R lines is a great milestone for RTD, Balfour Beatty and everyone involved in the delivery of the Southeast Rail Extension project.

“The Denver Metro region is experiencing tremendous growth and we’re honoured to be RTD’s partner in expanding its rail service to meet the region’s access and mobility needs for the future.”

The Southeast Rail Extension project was a part of the RTD’s FasTracks programme, which involves building 122 miles of commuter and light rail, 18 miles of bus rapid transit service and other associated projects.

Last month, Fluor-led joint venture Denver Transit Partners (DTP) delivered the Eagle P3 Commuter Rail Project in Denver, another key project under RTD’s FasTracks programme.
