Siemens Mobility has received an order to supply six additional type G1 metro trains to Nuremberg’s public transport operator VAG Verkehrs-Aktiengesellschaft.
The order is exercised under the first option of the original contract signed between the two entities in December 2015.

Overall, Siemens Mobility will now supply 27 new metro trains to the German city.
The four-car G1 trains will run on the U1 metro line from 2021, replacing the 12 type DT2 two-car trains.
VAG executive board member responsible for Technology and Marketing Tim Dahlmann-Resing said: “With the G1 train, we’ll clearly be launching a new era of underground operation. The trains not only look sleekly modern inside and out but also meet all our expectations.
“We can carry more passengers, offer them greater comfort and also improve usability for people with reduced mobility. With this train running on the U1 line, we can tackle the next 40 years of metro operation.”

By GlobalDataThe metro trains will be developed at Siemens’ Austrian facility in Vienna, while various vehicle components including drive converters, motors and control systems will be manufactured at Nuremberg.
Other associated works such as project management, development and service support will be managed in Erlangen.
Siemens Mobility CEO Sabrina Soussan said: “The G1 is a highly advanced train that’s been designed specifically to meet the needs of Nuremberg.
“All trains can also be converted later to automated operation making them future-proof over their entire lifecycle.”
Designed for manual operation, the trains feature wide doors with spacious interiors to improve passenger access and comfort.
Trains are also equipped with a comprehensive passenger information system, as well as LED light bars above the door to indicate when they are opening and closing.
