Rolling stock manufacturer Alstom has resumed industrial activities at its Taubaté site in Brazil after the opening of a new production line.

The latest line will manufacture stainless-steel carshells under a project that involves the delivery of 35 new trains to the Santiago Metro in Chile.

Alstom is expected to hire new employees for this new project, named NS16.

Recently, the site was remodelled to support the new production line. It is expected to produce seven stainless steel carshells per month in one shift.

Alstom Brazil managing director Pierre-Emmanuel Bercaire said: “The resumption of the industrial activities in Taubaté site is a very important mark for us all and reinforces our commitment with the country and the region.

“This site is a modern plant, equipped and prepared to receive railway projects coming from Brazil or any other country in the world, generating employment and bringing development for our region.”

Once built, the carshells will be shipped to Alstom’s unit in Chile, where they will be assembled for final delivery.

The manufacturing of the carshells began in Lapa site, another Alstom facility in Brazil, and will be completed in Taubaté where the remaining 166 carshells will be manufactured.

By 2020, the Taubaté site is expected to have 120 employees in the administrative and operational segments. Some of the employees from the Lapa site are already transferred.

The 16,000m² Alstom Taubaté site was opened in 2015 and since then the company has invested around €12m in it.

In a separate development, Alstom announced delivery of the first tram for Kaohsiung tramway Phase II in Taiwan.

The overall contract from China Steel involves the delivery of 15 such Citadis trams to Kaohsiung.
