Hong Kong metro operator MTR has signed two contracts with Changchun Railway Vehicles and Itochu-Kinki Sharyo-Kawasaki Consortium to buy 148 new rail cars and modify 348 existing units for future operation of East West Corridor of the Shatin to Central Link (SCL) project.

Under the HK$1.14bn contract, Changchun Railway Vehicles will design, supply, produce, test and commission 14 new 8-car trains that are scheduled to be delivered to Hong Kong for testing in 2017.

A second contract, worth HK$1.18bn, has been signed with a Japanese consortium of Itochu, Kinki Sharyo, and Kawasaki, which will design, manufacture, deliver, test and commission 36 new rail cars and reconfigure 348 rail cars of MTR’s existing West Rail Line, East Rail Line and Ma On Shan Line.

MTR Corporation CEO Jay Walder said: "The Shatin to Central Link is an exciting project as it will create two important rail arteries to serve Hong Kong from East to West as well as from North to South, providing even greater transport convenience for commuters.

"We will work closely with the contractors to ensure the rolling stocks delivered are of the highest quality."

"We are making good progress in our construction programme and these two train contracts mean all contracts for the trains of the Shatin to Central Link have now been awarded."

The 10-station 17km SCL railway project is scheduled to be completed in two phases. The section between Tai Wai and Hung Hom to form the East West Corridor is expected to complete in 2018, while the section between Hung Hom and Admiralty to form the North South Corridor will be completed in 2020.
