Hamburger Hafen und Logistik’s subsidiary Metrans has commissioned its ninth intermodal terminal at Ústi nad Labem in North Bohemia, Czech Republic.

The facility lies directly on the main rail line between the German seaports and the Metrans inland hub terminal in Prague that serves the Czech Republic.

It handles up to six daily connections with the Port of Hamburg, as well as daily connections between Usti nad Labem and the Czech Metrans hub terminal in Ceska Trebova.

"We are developing our already successful hinterland services even further, optimising the transport chain between the seaports and the central European hinterland."

The new terminal, which handles inland water vessels, trucks and trains, has three 120m rail sidings that are spanned by a 40m rail gantry crane and a single 400m siding served by two reach-stackers.

Hamburger Hafen und Logistik chairman of the executive board Klaus-Dieter Peters said: "By putting the Usti nad Labem terminal into operation, we are developing our already successful hinterland services even further, optimising the transport chain between the seaports and the central European hinterland."

Metrans is expanding its operations in central and eastern Europe.

The company took the delivery of 20 Traxx MS multi-system locomotives from Bombardier for services from Hamburg and Bremerhaven to the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary.

Metrans has also invested in new facilities and upgrading of existing terminals.
