Spanish rolling stock manufacturer CAF has secured a €89m contract from Colombia’s Empresa de Transporte Masivo Valle de Aburrá (Medellín Metro) to deliver 20 three-car trainsets in response to growing passenger demand.

In 1995, the Medellín Metro was inaugurated as the mass transit system for the Valley and the Metropolitan Area.

The Medellín Metro currently has two main lines in operation, A and B, extending for a total of 35.5km in a 27-station network.

The new trains, which will feature advanced technology, will be capable of operating in a single or multiple formation.

"With the new contract, the total number of trains supplied by CAF will increase to 36 units."

The latest order follows a contract won by CAF in 2009 for the supply of 13 three-car trains, which are currently in commercial service.

In January last year, the contract was extended with the addition of three further trains, the first of which is already built and in transit for delivery.

With the new contract, the total number of trains supplied by CAF will increase to 36 units.

In addition, CAF strengthens its footprint in the Latin American market, where significant projects have been delivered in the last few years, both with the supply of vehicles and also under rolling stock concession schemes.

Additionally, CAF and Luxtram signed a contract in June for the supply of 21 trams for the city of Luxembourg for approximately €83m.

This contract includes the supply of 21 high-capacity trains for about 450 passengers with the possibility of several extension phases.

The company noted that the first track sections will be laid on the first quarter of 2016, and the first train is scheduled to be delivered in early 2017.
