The Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India (DFCCIL) has awarded a Rs12.13bn ($179m) design-build contract to a consortium of Larson & Toubro (L&T) and Japan’s Sojitz to carry out electrification works as part of the western dedicated freight corridor (Western DFC).

Work will be carried out on a 422km section of the Western DFC between Vadodara in Gujarat and Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNPT) near Mumbai in Maharashtra.

L&T is already electrifying the adjacent 915km section of the Western DFC from Rewari to Vadodara.

For the railway electrification, the contractors will erect more than 3,000km of track along these two sections of the route.

Under the deal, the line will be equipped with two 25kV AC electrification and the overhead equipment (OHE) will allow sufficient clearance for the operation of double-stack container trains.

Scheduled to be completed within 42 months, the project includes the construction of seven traction substations (TSS), 40 switching stations, 897km single-track of OHE, Scada works at 12 stations and an operational control centre, together with the supply of all associated equipment.

For this project, the traction power transformers, auto transformers and copper conductors will be imported from Japan.

The project will be executed using mechanised OHE installation using the latest technology in railway construction, which will be a unique energy-efficient system to be implemented for India’s rail sector.

The project is funded by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and is part of the 1,490km western corridor proposed between Dadri near Delhi and JNPT near Mumbai.
