Russian rail equipment producer Transmashholding (TMH) has announced that a prototype of TEM28 diesel shunting locomotive is undergoing comparative tests at the Penza Operational Locomotive Depot.

During the tests, the engine will conduct experimental trips allowing assessment of technical functionalities. The new model will be compared to the TEM18 model, with tests to be completed by the end of this year.

Features covered by the tests include efficiency of the diesel generator unit, oil and fuel consumption, and technical reliability.

In addition, engineers will test the locomotive’s new cab, which is air-conditioned and offers a comprehensive visibility while ensuring comfort.

The depot’s experts will determine if the engine fulfills operating parameters and assess test results. Following analysis, they will then finally prepare a conclusion for the manufacturer.

In order to pass on the experience to their colleagues, the manufacturer will also assume the responsibility to train two engine drivers-cum-instructors from the depot.
