Wabtec has signed a $40m contract to design, install, test and commission Positive Train Control (PTC) for the South Florida Regional Transportation Authority (SFRTA).

SFRTA operates the Tri-Rail commuter rail service that links Florida's Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and West Palm Beach regions.

The contract will see Wabtec provide its Interoperable Electronic Train Management System (I-ETMS) equipment for use on 42 locomotives and cab cars.

The company will also provide a back-office server, wayside communications and signals, and a dispatch system, as well as various training and system integration services.

Wabtec expects to complete the installation process by the end of 2018.

The 114.1km line is wholly owned by the Florida Department of Transportation (DOT).

The system connects directly to Amtrak at multiple stations, including 18 stations along the Southeast Florida coast.

SFRTA’s PTC system will be fully interoperable with the system, which is being implemented by all Class 1 railroads.

The company manufactures equipment for locomotives, freight cars and passenger transit vehicles and also develops new switcher and commuter locomotives.
