Many commodities, including grains and potash, are transported to various ports using CN and / or Canadian Pacific Railway network and a strike would have severely affected these shipments, thereby increasing operating costs.

Retail importers would also have been negatively affected, in addition to the automotive industry.

CN noted that it transports over C$250bn ($185bn) worth of goods annually for a number of diverse business sectors.

CN serves the cities and ports of Vancouver, Montreal, Halifax and New Orleans connecting all major locations in North America, along with its operating railway subsidiaries.
