A delegation of the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) led by the Director-General has inspected the mock-up of the Alstom-made Metropolis trains for the Route 2020 project.

RTA reviewed the aesthetic design and interiors of the train and evaluated all comfort aspects as part of the inspection, which took place in Coignères, France.

The Alstom-led consortium ExpoLink, which also includes ACCIONA and Gulermak, previously signed a contract with RTA to design and build the extension of Dubai’s Red metro line, as well as modernise systems on the existing line.

The project is known as Route 2020 and is valued at nearly €2.6bn.

It is set to involve the construction of a 15km-long line that will branch off the existing Red line at Nakheel Harbour and Tower stations. The new line will comprise 11.8km of elevated metro and 3.2km of underground metro.

The extended line is to be launched due to an anticipated increase in ridership and is expected to start commercial service in 2020, providing a link to the site of the World Expo that is currently scheduled to be held in Dubai.

Alstom will provide the whole metro fleet consisting of 50 Metropolis trainsets under the consortium, and also integrate the power supply, communication networks, automatic fare control, track works and platform screen doors, providing a three-year warranty on the whole system.

The company will also modernise the existing metro line by enhancing the power supply, improving signalling systems and conducting various miscellaneous communication and track works.

Each of the Metropolis trainsets are 88m-long and consist of five cars, and will have the capacity to carry up to 700 passengers.

The trains feature wide gangways, large doors and windows, LED lighting with new video broadcast systems and are to comprise three distinct areas for Silver, Family and Gold classes.
