The Canarsie Tunnel serves as the main connection between Brooklyn and Manhattan, and also features the subway's busy L line.

Works outlined for the project include the rehabilitation of the Canarsie Tunnel following extensive damage by Hurricane Sandy in 2012.

First Avenue and Bedford Avenue subway stations will also be given a capacity upgrade, while the development of a new Avenue B substation is also scheduled as part of the development.

The Canarsie Tunnel was flooded during Hurricane Sandy, which caused substantial damage to the electrical systems, as well as the tunnel's communications equipment and subsystems.

"The Canarsie Tunnel was flooded during Hurricane Sandy, which caused substantial damage to the electrical systems, as well as the tunnel's communications equipment and subsystems."

The JV will carry out the civil works in the tunnel and repair damages and defects, as well as replace the roadbed, tracks, sleepers and various other components.

The associated structures, lighting, signals and communications systems of the tunnel will also be modernised.

Additionally, the JV is scheduled to conduct the relocation of several utilities, in addition to upgrades and reinforcements of First Avenue station in Manhattan and Bedford station in Brooklyn.

The development also includes installation of flood mitigation and protection systems in order to avoid such extensive flood damage occurring in future.

The frequency of train services on the New York Subway’s L Line is expected to increase following the project's completion.

Judlau and TC Electric are currently working on eight projects to repair damages caused by Hurricane Sandy for multiple agencies under the MTA. The combined value of the projects is estimated to be nearly €1.1bn.
