US-based commuter rail service Caltrain has awarded a $32.1m contract to Proven Management for the South San Francisco Station Improvement project, following approval by the rail line's Board of Directors.
Construction under the project will begin in November this year and is expected to be completed by mid-2019.

The $61m development involves the replacement of the existing South San Francisco Station with a new centre boarding platform that will connect to a pedestrian underpass, as well as associated track and signal works.
It will also include the construction of a new 700ft centre board platform equipped with facilities, which will connect to a new pedestrian underpass from the platform to Grand Avenue / Poletti Drive.
The station will offer better connectivity along Grand Avenue for the City of South San Francisco and become completely compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act upon the project's completion.
Caltrain noted that parts of the construction work will be carried out at nights and weekends in order to minimise the impact on rail operations.

Caltrain stated that there will be temporary noise impacts in the locality due to site-clearing and construction activities.
Caltrain is owned and operated by the Peninsula Corridor Joint Powers Board and provides commuter rail services from San Francisco to San Jose, and also to Gilroy.
The organisation is currently carrying out electrification works along the rail system and plans to reduce diesel emissions by 97% by 2040.
