UK Network Rail has announced that work has started to build a new subway at Hackney Wick Overground station.

Part of a £25m scheme to transform the station, the subway will provide ground level north to south access beneath the existing railway line, and replace the footbridge that was removed last month.

The project is delivered by Network Rail as part of its Railway Upgrade Plan, on behalf of London Legacy Development.

Network Rail route managing director for Anglia Richard Schofield said: “The new subway will improve access to the station and platforms, making journeys quicker and easier for passengers.

“The new station will also offer much better facilities and support the regeneration of the area as part of our Railway Upgrade Plan.”

Work is currently ongoing to build the concrete structure on land north of the station and will be ready to be put in-place underneath the railway next month.

The new walkway is planned to be divided into two with an illuminated glass wall. The subway has been designed by architect Landolt Brown with support from Mott Macdonald engineering.

"The new subway will improve access to the station and platforms, making journeys quicker and easier for passengers."

A new entrance and ticket hall will also be built at ground floor level, with additional stairs and two extra lifts to improve station access.

Work on the subway is due for completion by early next year.

Tower Hamlets Council and Hackney Council have both provided £1m for the station refurbishment. The project has been backed by the Greater London Authority, London Borough of Hackney and London Borough of Tower Hamlets.

Volker Fitzpatrick will serve as Network Rail’s principal contractor for the project.
