Thales has secured a communications-based train control (CBTC) signalling contract for the Manaus Monorail project in the Brazilian state of Amazonas.

Under the contract awarded by Monotrilho Manaus Consortium, Thales will install its SelTrac CBTC system on the 20km monorail for a fully automated driverless system.

Installation will be carried out in two phases with partial completion planned to coincide with the FIFA World Cup in 2014.

At its centre of competence in Toronto, Canada, Thales along with Brazilian subsidiary Omnisys will supply the SelTrac CBTC system, which offers low operation and maintenance costs, as well as a smoother travel experience for commuters.

In December 2011, Thales won a contract from Andrade Gutierrez and CR Almeida to deliver its SelTrac CBTC signalling system for Line 17 of the São Paulo metro in Brazil.

"Thales will install its SelTrac CBTC system on the 20km monorail for a fully automated driverless system."

The new 18km elevated São Paulo Metro line will be driverless and fully automatic and will be built by a consortium led by AG, and including CR Almeida, Scomi and MPE Group.

The first phase of the project will be completed in 27 months in August 2014 to support FIFA World Cup traffic in Brazil.

Line 17 will serve 18 stations and connect Congonhas International Airport to the Metro Rail network, spanning Jabaquara terminus station on Line 1 – Blue to Morumbi station of Line 4 – Yellow.

Thales has previously delivered SelTrac CBTC signalling systems to 54 projects in 31 cities around the world.
