Sweden-based Skanska and partners have secured a £453m contract from UK-based Network Rail to design and construct the Waterloo and South West Upgrade on the South West Trains network in southern England.
The company received the contract in alliance with AECOM, Colas Rail and Mott MacDonald.
Skanska’s part of the contract is worth £165m.
As part of the £800m project, the alliance will be responsible for complete design and construction to return the Waterloo International Terminal to use.
Other works will include platform modifications at Waterloo station, as well as enhancements to the outlying stations and rail systems.
The Wessex Route is part of the South Western Rail network that connects the terminal at Waterloo station to the south coast.
The focus of the alliance will be on sustainability. In collaboration with Network Rail, the alliance aims to deliver an enhanced railway with 30% increased capacity.
Work on the project started in November and is scheduled for completion in April 2019.
The Waterloo and South West Upgrade will bring longer platforms for longer trains at various stations on the Reading line, 30 brand new trains providing 150 extra carriages between London Waterloo and Windsor.
The project will also see introduction of new technology to make trains better and further improvements will be made to depots and maintenance facilities.
