Under the deal, Norfolk will install the system on Fortescue’s track duplication project between Port Hedland and Christmas Creek iron ore mine in the Pilbara, Western Australia.
Using satellite positioning technology to track train movements over a 294km stretch of railway, the signalling system will allow better efficiency and flexibility on the track, increasing annual tonnage capacity, according to Norfolk .
Partial design, fabrication, construction and testing of the radio-based system, along with commissioning support, are also part of the contract.
The deal includes the installation of two new control hubs, allowing FMG to track trains and control signals from its headquarters in Perth and Port Headland.
Work is expected to start immediately and is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2012.
Around 150 Norfolk staff, including design, factory, construction, logistics, testing and administration, will work on the project.
