UK high-speed rail network's developer and promoter HS2 has proposed a new route and station for the planned Phase II section High Speed 2 (HS2) line in South Yorkshire.

The proposed route between London and Sheffield is expected to decrease costs by around £1bn. According to HS2's chairman David Higgins, the route would also reduce journey duration on services heading to Leeds, York, and Newcastle.

HS2 is also exploring the possibility for a parkway station on this newly proposed route, which in part follows the M18 motorway.

Higgins said: "Projects of HS2's size, scale, and significance should seek to provide maximum benefit for the people they serve."

"The route would reduce journey duration on services heading to Leeds, York, and Newcastle."

The recommendation also includes extending HS2 services to the existing Sheffield Midland station using the existing railway line.

Higgins adds: "I have listened to very constructive comments and discussions on how HS2 should best serve South Yorkshire and recommend the option of using the existing city centre station.

"Decisions of this scale sometimes involve compromise, and through dialogue I believe we have reached the best solution for South Yorkshire."

Using the Sheffield Midland station would allow the operation of high-speed trains from Sheffield to Leeds by building a link back onto the main HS2 line north of Sheffield.

This link is expected to deliver Transport for the North's ambition for a frequent 30 minute journey time between Leeds and Sheffield.

Sheffield's city region LEP chair Sir Nigel Knowles said: "Connectivity with the rest of the UK is a major factor in achieving our growth plans. Of equal importance is the inter-connectivity within the North and we look forward to working with the government and other partners to bring that into fruition as quickly as possible."

The Secretary of State for Transport will consider the recommendations before making an announcement on the full HS2 Phase II route later this year.
