Hitachi Rail Europe has selected UK-based wireless technology provider Nomad Digital to provide on-board servers (OBS) for a fleet of 92 future high-speed Super Express trains being supplied for the UK’s Intercity Express Programme (IEP).

The servers will transmit all operational data between the train and trackside, including diagnostic information from the train management system, energy consumption data, seat reservation and timetable information.

Nomad’s R3500 router will be used by the onboard server as the communications gateway for multiple 3G networks to provide connectivity.

Nomad has previously supplied onboard servers for the fleet of 225km/h Class 395 EMUs built by Hitachi, 29 of which are in service with Southeastern.

Assembly of the 92 Super Express trains will be carried out at Hitachi’s new rolling stock manufacturing and assembly plant at Newton Aycliffe in Durham, which will be fully operational in 2015 and is expected to produce about 35 vehicles a month.

The fleet of 92 electric and bi-mode trains will be maintained at new depots in Swansea, Bristol, London and Doncaster.

In September 2012, Hitachi Rail Europe awarded a €200m contract to Tognum subsidiary MTU to supply 250 700kW diesel powerpacks for the Super Express trains.
