UK-based engineering and construction group Costain has won a £30m contract from Crossrail to build Paddington New Yard.

Work under the contract will include building a bus parking deck to allow space for Crossrail trains to diverge from the Great Western line, as well as preparatory work for the installation of new rail track and systems for new sidings.

The yard will be constructed between Crossrail’s tunnels and the Great Western railway. The contract is Costain’s eleventh from Crossrail.

"Costain was selected because of our ability to deliver value as a long-standing partner."

Work will begin immediately and is expected to end in December 2015.

Costain CEO Andrew Wyllie said: "The Crossrail scheme is meeting a vital national requirement, creating a key part of the UK’s transport infrastructure.

"Costain was selected because of our ability to deliver value as a long-standing partner, which we believe is firmly in keeping with ‘engineering tomorrow’, our commitment to generating and delivering innovative, value-driven solutions to meet major national needs."

When operational in 2018, Crossrail services are expected to increase London’s rail-based transport network capacity by 10%, while supporting regeneration and cutting journey times across the city.

The Crossrail route will pass through 38 stations and run from Maidenhead and Heathrow to the west, through 21km of new twin-bore tunnels to Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the east.

In February, the Costain Skanska joint venture (JV) won a £200m contract (C412) from Crossrail to build Bond Street station, while in May 2012, the JV bagged a £40m contract from Crossrail to build ventilation and access shafts at Eleanor Street and Mile End Park in east London, UK.
