The Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) in the US has announced a pilot programme where passengers will receive real-time train information as a text on their mobile phones.

Passengers will text a travel request including train schedules, planned service work, schedule changes and delays, and the response will be instantly sent to their mobile phones for free.

Text engine company Coo Coo is the rail operator’s partner for this programme.

The service is carrier and device independent and will work on all mobile phones without using the internet, according to officials.

LIRR is owned by New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority.
