Macau’s Bureau for Transport Infrastructure (GIT) has launched an international public tender to supply system and rolling stock for the first phase of the city’s automatic light railway system.

The tender also includes design and construction work to refurbish the Sai Van bridge to adapt it for the light metro system.

The tender calls for companies that can supply rolling stock with a rubber tyred system, which will be used with 30m-long trains, accommodating around 200 passengers.

The initial $90m 22km-long first phase will run for 19 hours a day from Portas do Centro near the border with mainland China, to Lago da Barra and across the Sai Van bridge to the island of Taipa.

The 23-station first phase will start in 2014, with future extension across the Macau peninsula.

The contract includes options for two additional batches of trains and train maintenance up to ten years.
