The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority in the US has opened the new six-mile extension of its Metro system, linking the city’s East with downtown and Pasadena.
The $898m Metro Gold Line Eastside Extension between Union Station and East Los Angeles includes 1.7 miles of underground track and covers eight new stations including two underground.
The line will be operated by 90ft-long trains running at speeds of 55mph when underground and 35mph on city streets and is expected to carry 13,000 people daily.
Trains will run about every eight minutes in the mornings, every 12 minutes during the day and every 20 minutes at night.
The Metro system in the city has now reached 79 miles, all of which has been built in the last 20 years.
