Spain’s Catalan Government Railways FGC (Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya) has approved a €155m contract with an Alstom-CAF consortium to supply 24 railcars.
The Class 113 four-car trains will be used on the Vallès network in Barcelona from the second half of 2013.
The new trains will replace the network’s 20 existing three-car Class 111 units and help increase the network’s capacity, with demand expected to rise by 30% over the next decade.
The order has an option for an additional 20 trains, which, combined with the existing Class 22 and Class 112 units, will allow the network to operate 66 units at a rate of 40 trains an hour in 2015.
The 80m-long, 800-capacity trains feature an operating power of 1.5kV DC, AC traction motors and regenerative braking, as well as interior passenger information systems and CCTV surveillance system.
