Southern California’s Metrolink has announced plans to activate an inward and outward-facing video camera system in all of its locomotives to enhance safety.
When activated, Metrolink will become the first railroad system in the nation to use inward cameras, says the operator.
The new Locomotive Digital Video Recorder (LDVR) system uses three cameras per locomotive, one outward-facing and two inward-facing, to record activity in front of the train as well as to observe control panels and people inside the locomotive.
The system, which will be provided by US firm Railhead Vision Systems, can also capture ambient audio transmissions associated with the visual images.
The operator plans to activate all the cameras and audio devices in each of the system’s 52 locomotives shortly.
