The new government international railway strategy office will inform foreign governments of sales points and promote overseas technological cooperation.

The plan targets countries that are developing or planning high-speed railway systems, such as Brazil and Vietnam.

The country is also eyeing opportunities in the US which is planning to introduce high-speed railways under its Green New Deal initiative.

Ministry officials said that Japan’s bullet-train system costs less in maintenance than its rivals, such as the French TGV and German ICE systems, and features safety features including an early earthquake detector to prevent derailments.
