Irish Rail has placed an order for 24 high-output ballast wagons with US locomotive manufacturer Wabtec.
The contract for the order stands at $9m.
The wagons are operated by remote control to spread ballast along the tracks. Track ballast forms the trackbed on which railway tracks are laid.
The company’s subsidiaries Becorit, POLI-MZT and Standard Car Truck will provide components for the wagons.
