The town of Newport in Wales is constructing a new £22m station using a unique recyclable material that requires less steel support in the lead up to the Ryder Cup golf tournament in 2010.
Ethylene tetra fluoro ethylene (ETFE) – a material more lightweight than glass – will be used for the station which will double in size to 2,100m².
Two new terminals and a station footbridge will be constructed and one station platform extended by 50m as part of the new project.
The station will also get a new entrance towards the northern side of Newport city, known as a gateway to Wales.
The new building will feature three lifts, CCTV, modernised customer information and ticketing systems and new waiting shelters.
A new and expanded car park with 250 spaces will also be built.
Work will be done by UK construction firm Galliford Try using designs by the Atkins/Grimshaw partnership.
The project is being funded by Network Rail and the Welsh Government.
The work is expected to be complete in 11 months.
