Indian Railways has almost completed the construction of its network’s longest rail bridge, the 4.62km Vallarpadam-Edapally bridge in the state of Kerela.

The bridge connects the proposed International Container Transshipment Terminal (ICTT) at Vallarpadam with Edapally and cuts across an island over the Vembanad lake.

The bridge stands on 134 pillars and has seven metres of clearance.

The rail bridge is being built by infrastructure company AFCONS, at a cost of Rs298 crore.

The bridge is part of the project to build a 9km rail line for ICTT and is scheduled to open in November 2009.
