French National Railways Operator Réseau Ferré de France (RFF) has approved a €115m grant to overhaul its 160km Paris RER Line D.
The line connects Orry-la-Ville, Melun and Malesherbes in the capital city.
The work will be carried out in two phases and RFF will provide part of the funds required for each phase.
The first phase includes improving signals on a section between Villeneuve-St-Georges and Villiers-le-Be and upgrading power supplies at Corbeil. Recovery margins in the terminal layover times at Goussainville will be increased and a new station will be built at Pompadour, railwaygazette.com reports.
The renovation will increase train frequency from eight to 12 trains per hour and improve on-time performance to 90%. The work is expected to be complete by December 2013.
The second phase includes centralising the operational control of the tracks used by Line D to improve traffic management and efficiency.
Paris public transport operator Syndicat des transports d’Île-de-France will co-operate with RFF for the project.
