US national rail operator Amtrak has signed an agreement with the Commonwealth of Virginia to launch the first state-supported intercity passenger rail services from Richmond to Washington, DC to provide more passenger and freight rail transportation options.

The new route will have stops at Staples Mill Road in Richmond, Ashland, Fredericksburg, Quantico, Woodbridge, Alexandria, and L’Enfant Plaza in Washington, DC

The train is scheduled to start from Richmond at 7.00am and reach Washington at 9.30am, and afternoon service is scheduled to leave Washington at 3.55pm and reach Richmond at 6.25pm.

The new daily services from Richmond to Washington will start from December 2009.

This project, in addition to the previous agreement to provide a service from Lynchburg to Washington, DC, is estimated to remove 1.4m cars from highways, saving more than 8.3m gallons of fuel and eliminating 66,000t of carbon emissions each year.
