Italy-based train operator Trenitalia is planning to offer international passenger rail services by entering the French market.

The company will bid for Veolia Cargo, operating in France, the Netherlands, Germany and Italy and has applied for routes to operate international passenger trains under a new legislation.

Trenitalia will operate passenger services on the Milan-Lyon-Paris route from December 2009.

Veolia Environment intents to sell €1bn of Veolia Cargo assets by the end of 2009.
