Banedanmark has gained approval from Denmark’s government to revamp the signalling system of the entire national rail network at a cost of €3.2bn.
The signalling programme by this state-owned enterprise aims at installing a European standardised transport control system and a communication-based train control system on different sections of the network.
Once the new signal system goes live, passengers can expect punctuality, higher line speeds and shorter journey times on some routes.
The government also hopes it will lead to substantial savings in both operations and maintenance costs.
Existing equipment will be totally replaced with new technology and a set of new operational rules will be put in place to help it function.
All the phases of the signalling programme are expected to be complete by 2021.
