New automatic ticket gates are set to open to the public at Birmingham stations from 30 April 2009 as part of a £2.7m investment by rail operator London Midland.
The gates have been set up at Snow Hill, University and Five Ways Stations.
They open only when the passengers swipe their valid tickets on the machines. These new devices will help in reducing fare evasion and creating a secure network.
The machines’ software would also enable the rail operators to gather information for assessing passenger levels on individual routes and predicting future growth.
This project will be completed by the end of 2009 with installation of these gates at two more stations.
