Austrian group PORR has been awarded a $115m contract for the rehabilitation of the Bucharest-Giurgiu railroad line in Southern Romania.

PORR’s local subsidiary PORR Construct will carry out the construction work for 30 months.

PORR CEO Karl-Heinz Strauss said: “The modernisation of the historically significant rail link between Bucharest and Giurgiu and the landmark in Gradistea will improve the transport infrastructure in the economic region in the long term. We are proud that we are able to realise this technically demanding mega-project.”

Under the design build project, a total of four bridges and track works will be renewed along the line for the Romanian Railway Company (CFR SA).

In addition, work to repair station buildings and renovate the signalling systems will also be undertaken along the line.

The contract also includes reopening the Gradistea Bridge, which collapsed in 2005 during a flood.

PORR Construct said that the Gradistea Bridge will considerably improve freight traffic in the region.

In November, Romania’s transport ministry said that the development will be financed by EU funds for the 2014-2020 period.

In October, a consortium of PORR UK and Aggregate Industries UK secured a £260m contract to deliver a modular track system for the High Speed 2 (HS2) project in the UK.

In February, Polish railway company PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe awarded an €88m contract to PORR to modernise a section of the E59 line.

Under this contract, PORR has to renovate the tracks and infrastructure of the E59 railway line between Krzyż and Dobiegniew.

It is also tasked with the reconstruction of 47km of railway track along railway line number 351, as well as the construction of 12 points, 15 culverts, nine bridges, and nine viaducts.

PORR expects to complete the work by late 2022.
