Vossloh Fastening Systems has won a €30m contract to supply fastening systems for the high-speed rail line extending from Mecca to Medina in Saudi Arabia.
The 450km line will ensure safe, green and fast transport, especially for pilgrims and tourists, and alleviate road traffic congestion between Jeddah and the sacred sites.
The newly built all-electrified line, which is expected to be operational in 2015, will support trains running at a top speed of 320km per hour. The anticipated journey time between Mecca and Jeddah will take less than 30 minutes, while the onward 400km journey to Medina will take about two hours.
Vossloh CEO Werner Andree said: "This demanding project constitutes another reference in one of the strongest growing rail markets in the world. Moreover, it gives us the opportunity to prove the high quality and reliability of our systems on the world’s first high-speed line across the desert."
Vossloh claims that its systems can resist vast variations in temperature apart from providing both flexibility and strength to cope with the high speeds and the challenging subsoil.
The first of the fasteners will be shipped out before the end of the year.
