The Government of Victoria in Australia is transforming the Murray Basin rail freight network to help revitalise the state's network.

As part of the A$40m stage one, upgrades were made to the Mildura and Hopetoun rail line and more than 175,000 sleepers were installed, in addition to replacing 3,400m of track.

Stage two of the project will involve gauge conversion of the rail lines between Yelta and Maryborough, as well as between Ouyen and Murrayville. Furthermore, the Maryborough to Ararat rail line will be upgraded and reopened after having been closed for a decade, while axle loading on these lines will also be increased from 19t to 21t.

"We’re boosting capacity, safety and reliability of freight services in regional Victoria so we can meet future growth of the region."

Once the line reopens, a rail connection will be provided for freight to the Australian Rail Track’s interstate line at Ararat.

During this period, various level crossings along the Maryborough to Ararat line will be closed as a safety measure. Each crossing will then be individually assessed according to safety criteria.

Consultation will start shortly with local councils, land owners and surrounding communities to keep them informed about the works.

Construction works are set to begin in July 2017, with vegetation on the Maryborough to Ararat line being removed beforehand.

The Maryborough to Yelta and Ouyen to Murrayville rail lines will be closed from August next year for five months to transform these corridors.

Victoria Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allan said:  “The Andrews Labor Government is getting on with transforming Victoria’s rail freight network.

“We’re boosting capacity, safety and reliability of freight services in regional Victoria so we can meet the future growth of the region.”
