Unipetrol to purchase three Vectron MS locomotives from Siemens

Czech railway transport company Unipetrol Doprava has signed a contract with Siemens for the purchase of three modular multi-system Vectron MS locomotives.

Czech railway transport company Unipetrol Doprava has signed a contract with Siemens for the purchase of three modular multi-system Vectron MS locomotives.

The first locomotive will be delivered by Czech Siemens in December this year, with the other two to follow next year.

The purchase of new electric locomotives is part of Unipetrol’s gradual vehicle fleet renewal initiative.

Unipetrol Doprava executive Ladislav Hlína said: “Modernisation of our vehicle fleet is one of the prerequisites for meeting our medium-term plan to increase the volume of transported products, from the current 3.1 million tonnes to the planned four million transported tonnes in 2021.

“We are already working on the preparation of other investment projects.”

The company is planning to invest more than CZK16bn ($635.9m) throughout 2017 and 2018 under a recently adopted strategic investment plan.

Siemens' Vectron locomotives would be primarily used to transport chemical products, and are capable of operating in all neighbouring countries such as Germany, Austria, Poland and Slovakia, in addition to the Czech Republic.

They will have a maximum output of 6,400KW and a speed of 160km/h, and are to be equipped with a unified European train control system (ETCS), GSM-R and a remote diagnostics system.

Siemens mobility division director Roman Kokšal said: “We are pleased that it is the Siemens Vectron locomotives that Unipetrol chose to carry out its plan, thereby expanding its fleet of Vectrons, which are already being used by a number of other carriers in the Czech Republic.

“It only confirms the fact that investments in the development of these locomotives were exactly the right step.”

Unipetrol Doprava also specialises in the forwarding and leasing of railway wagons, in addition to repair and cleaning services and various consulting activities.
