UK Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin has launched Virgin Trains’ new direct services between London and the towns of Shrewsbury and Blackpool.

These direct services will allow passengers to reach London Euston in just 2h 36min from Shrewsbury and 3h 9min from Blackpool.

As part of this development, Shrewsbury will receive two services in each direction on a weekday, while Blackpool North will have a daily trip to London Euston on weekdays.

Virgin Trains lead executive Phil Wittingham said: "Linking these two towns with direct services to London Euston means it is now even easier for them to visit London and for Londoners to journey up, all in the comfort that has come to be expected of Virgin Trains."

"We are already seeing more services, more passenger journeys and more jobs being generated by the industry."

BBC News reported that this Virgin Trains service was approved by the Office of Rail Regulation in September.

The new service will have stops at Wellington, Telford Central, Wolverhampton, Birmingham New Street, Birmingham International, Coventry, Watford Junction and London Euston.

McLoughlin said: "This is another sign of the renaissance in the UK’s railways, and we are already seeing more services, more passenger journeys and more jobs being generated by the industry.

"Our rail network is a key part of our long-term economic plan which is why more than £38bn will be invested in maintaining and upgrading the network over the next five years."
