The new £20m railway station in Northampton, UK, is set to reopen in early next year, offering additional capacity and improved features to passengers.

UK rail infrastructure operator Network Rail has said that the station will open ‘no later than 12 January’.

The West Northamptonshire Development Corporation (WNDC) started the revamp of Northampton Railway Station in August 2013.

Double in size of the old station, the new station building covers 2,500m² and provides a lift between the car park entrance and the booking hall, which leads to a new bridge with covered stairs and new lifts to all platforms.

Network Rail area director Terry Strickland said: "The new station is a fantastic addition to the town.

"The new station is a fantastic addition to the town."

"Its modern design and new facilities provide a fitting gateway to Northampton and is the latest example of investment in the rail network to meet the demands of an increasing number of passengers."

The new station provides more ticket barriers and also gives access from Black Lion Hill.

As part of the development, West Midlands train operator London Midland started moving staff and equipment into the building. The operator said this process will normally take three to four weeks.

Additional features will be added to the station after its opening and those include Starbucks, Café Republic and a WHSmith store and an Enterprise car rental outlet.

Officials also said that the passengers will be able to use the new lifts and bridge at the station from 15 December.

The station is served by London Midland local services southbound to London and northbound to Birmingham New Street and Crewe, on the Northampton Loop of the West Coast Main Line.
