Thales has secured a €17m contract for the design and manufacture of signalling, communications and operational control centre (OCC) systems for the Danhai Light Rail Transit project in Taiwan.

The construction of Taiwan’s second Tramway line is carried out by country’s industry giant China Steel, along with its subsidiaries United Steel Engineering & Construction and Taiwan Rolling Stock.

China Steel and its subsidiaries are responsible for the construction of Danhai’s Light Rail Phase 1 Corridors, including the Green Mountain Line, a section of Blue Ocean Line and a depot.

"We believe in Taiwan as a showcase for this emerging segment."

Thales Japan and Taiwan managing director Jean-Louis Moraud said: "Taiwan is among the most mature and demanding public transport markets in Asia, it is no surprise if it is the first to introduce LRT lines in the region.

"We believe in Taiwan as a showcase for this emerging segment, and we believe in our partner to jointly deliver this iconic project."

This new light rail transit project is New Taipei City government’s efforts to enhance the country’s public transportation infrastructure in anticipation of expected population growth.

Expected to be completed in 2018, the new line will run a total of approximately 10km.

Thales has already supported metro projects in Malaysia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, Japan and China.

Thales recently signed a contract with Qatar’s Lusail Light Rail Transit project civil works contractor QDVC to deliver an integrated supervision, telecommunications, security and automatic fare collection system.

For this project, Thales will supply a fully integrated solution that offers high-level services such as real-time information, flexible and up-to-date contactless ticketing systems, optimal security of passengers and complete integrated supervision solution.
