Thales India has signed a signalling contract with Indian rail operator Southern Railway to deliver the European train control system (ETCS) Level 1 solution.

Also known in India as the train protection and warning system (TPWS), the solution will be installed on the Basin Bridge-Arakkonam section in southern India.

Thales India managing director Eric Lenseigne said: "This contract, which will increase the efficiency and operational safety of this stretch, further cements our position in the Indian transportation market.

"This contract, which will increase the efficiency and operational safety of this stretch, further cements our position in the Indian transportation market."

"Thales’s rail solutions are present throughout India, where we were the first company to introduce state-of-the-art CBTC metro signalling technology. As a trusted partner, we will continue to accompany the development of India’s transport infrastructure."

This ETCS L1 system will enable trains to operate at high speeds on this 66km-long stretch, while its automatic train protection capability will ensure secure and safe transportation.

The system will benefit the rail operator by reducing travel times, while increasing line capacity.
