Stadler to deliver 40 double-deck Kiss EMUs to Hungary’s MÁV-START

Stadler has signed an agreement to deliver up to 40 six-car double-deck Kiss electric multiple units (EMUs) to Hungary's national passenger operator MÁV-START.

Stadler has signed an agreement to deliver up to 40 six-car double-deck Kiss electric multiple units (EMUs) to Hungary's national passenger operator MÁV-START. 

MÁV-START has an obligation to order a minimum of ten EMUs from Stadler under the new arrangement. The value of the first order is expected to amount to €195m, including training and spare parts. 

The new 155.88m-long, 2.8m-wide and 4.6m-high trains are currently scheduled to enter service in 2019. The framework contract states that MÁV has the flexibility to schedule procurement of the 40 units gradually, depending on the availability of European Union (EU) funding.

The Kiss trains will comprises six coaches and contain 600 seats, and will be compatible with the existing 123 Flirt EMUs that have been delivered by Stadler during the previous decade.

The trains will be equipped with four toilets each, and have the capacity to carry four wheelchairs, as well as 12 bicycles or five strollers.

The units are set to be fitted with EVM and ETCS Level 2 train control systems, and can run at a speed of 160km/h on Hungary's railway lines. They will also feature passenger information systems, spacious interiors, air conditioning and free wifi.

Stadler's Kiss EMUs will be deployed on the busy suburban lines of Budapest-Vác-Szob and Budapest-Cegléd-Szolnok between 2019 and 2020, before being gradually implemented on the Budapest-Újszász-Szolnok and Budapest–Hatvan–Gyöngyös lines.
