Features of these spacious trains include transparent interior design and large multi-purpose spaces in the entrance areas. The trains will have a maximum speed of 160km/h.

Stadler said the new FLIRT trains will offer lower energy consumption and costs, due to the vehicles’ lightweight aluminium bodies.

In addition, these will be equipped with an accessible toilet and is prepared for the modern European Train Control System (ETCS). Moreover, the crash fronts will ensure a very high level of passive safety for passengers.

In December last year, NS awarded a €500m contract with Spanish train manufacturer CAF to deliver its Sprinter electric multiple-unit fleet.

Under this contract, CAF will provide 120 passenger trains for NS’s Sprinter service. It also includes options for additional trains.
