Siemens to install electronic interlocking systems on Germany’s Hannover- Uelzen rail line

Siemens has won a contract from DB's railway infrastructure provider, DB Netz, to install the latest control and safety systems as part of the upgrade of the Hannover–Uelzen line in Germany.

Under the deal, the company will deliver an electronic interlocking subcentre (ESTW UZ) at Celle as well as five further distributed interlockings.

Siemens will supply and install its Simis D electronic interlocking and its AC100 axle counting system which has over 350 counting heads, more than 120 S700K point machines and over 300 MSTT signals.

The project is scheduled to start in the summer of 2014 and upon completion DB expects that the capacity on the line will be considerably improved.

Simis D interlocking technology provided by Siemens will operate from control centre in Hannover and the company is planning to install six electronic interlockings to replace the conventional systems on the line.

The technology's hardware and software are of modular design, which enables regional as well as junction interlockings to be tailor-made using standardised technology.

It provides standardised interfaces for the control of signals, points and blocking devices that allows simple modifications and low-cost adaptations to be made.

The company said that if required, the computers of the Simis D interlocking can be positioned on a distributed basis to decrease the distance between interlocking and field elements or to reduce the cabling costs.

The cabling concept of the Simis D system is based on distributed element controllers like the MSTT signal.

The company said that by using the integrated and distributed element operating modules, the space required by the new interlocking technology will be reduced and also allows the connection of the operator's own existing systems, technologies and components.
