Chile’s state-owned metro operator Metro De Santiago has awarded a $451.9m contract to the CAF-Thales consortium to supply rolling stock for Lines 3 and 6 in its capital, Santiago.

The consortium was selected against Alstom, the Rápido 63 consortium of Hyundai and Ansaldo, Hitachi-Mitsubishi and Siemens.

Under the contract, CAF-Thales won the tender for the supply of 185 new cars with heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system, the communications-based train control automatic driving system and rolling stock maintenance.

Of the total 185 new rail cars, 115 will be used on the 22.1km Line 3 and the remaining 70 will run on the 15.3km-long Line 6.

"We are incorporating the best practices and technology, and the latest innovations to deliver the best possible service."

Currently under construction, both Line 3 and 6 are being designed for driverless operation with steel-wheeled rolling stock.

The new cars will also be equipped with passenger information system, train interior surveillance cameras and increased security.

Metro De Santiago general manager Ramón Cañas said: "The construction of the new Lines 3 and 6 represents the biggest challenge we have faced as a company, not only because we are building in parallel, but also because we are incorporating the best practices and technology, and the latest innovations to deliver the best possible service."

Expected to deliver energy efficiency, the new cars will have a greater capacity to carry about 260 passengers than existing trains on the network.

The project combines more than one million potential network users, and 28 new stations.
