Railconsult assigned to investigate Tinnosbanen

Railconsult, part of Nordic engineering consultant Rejlers, has been assigned to investigate Norway’s oldest stretch of electric railway, Tinnosbanen, which has been out of service since 1991.

Railconsult, part of Nordic engineering consultant Rejlers, will investigate ways to bring Norway’s oldest stretch of electric railway, Tinnosbanen, back into service.

Built in 1907 and electrified in 1911, Tinnosbanen track was originally built for the Norwegian establishment in Rjukan, but has been out of service since 1991.

An option to use the track for tourism in the future is being investigated. The investigation will consider operation, land and materials among other things.

A management plan will also be established for the track that will examine the status of all the technical facilities and buildings along the track.

This plan will form a basis for maintaining and preserving them in the future, Rejlers said.

The assignments will be completed and presented by the end of 2013.

Railconsult will provide a number of different suggestions to the Norwegian National Rail Administration on how to bring back the stretch back into service.

Tinnosbanen is in Telemark, in the south of the country; an area with a lot of forest, mountains and traditional houses.
