Asciano’s coal haulage division, Pacific National Coal, has opened a new $180m train maintenance and provisioning facility at Nebo in Queensland, Australia.
Pacific National’s new facility will support its coal haulage operations and increase the efficiency of coal haulage services on the Goonyella, Blackwater and Newlands rail systems.
The facility will be used for refuelling of trains, routine train inspections and wagon and locomotive maintenance work.
The Nebo facility will have the capacity to support more than 25 coal trains, with eight bays for locomotives and two tracks for wagon maintenance.
Currently, the company transports coal to the Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal, the Port of Gladstone and Port of Abbot Point under contracts with a range of clients including Xstrata, Rio Tinto, Macarthur Coal, Anglo American, Middlemount, and Bowen Central.
From January 2013, the company is also planning to transport coal to Mitsui Coal.
Planning for the new train provisioning and maintenance facilities at Nebo started in 2010, including consultation with key stakeholders and community members to make sure that the project had the minimum environmental, noise and land impacts.
The design and construction of the new facility was carried out under a partnership between Pacific National Coal and Abigroup Contractors, BG&E and QR National.
The company said that the facilities have also been designed to interface with QR National’s rail network and a connection agreement has been negotiated with QR National to ensure the efficient integration of the facility with the existing network.
