NSW Transport opens Sydney’s South West Rail Link

Australia's Transport for New South Wales (NSW) has commissioned the South West Rail Link, Sydney's new 11.4km-long rail line from Leppington to Glenfield through Edmondson Park.

Australia’s Transport for New South Wales (NSW) has commissioned the South West Rail Link, Sydney’s new 11.4km-long rail line from Leppington to Glenfield through Edmondson Park.

This $1.8bn project was delivered by the NSW’s Transport Construction Authority (TCA) with a goal to address the issues of reliability and passenger growth on the metropolitan rail network.

NSW premier and minister for Western Sydney Mike Baird said: "The communities of South Western Sydney have waited far too long for a modern, reliable train line, and today this government has delivered.

"The South West Rail Link, including two brand new modern stations at Leppington and Edmondson Park, is now open to customers more than one year ahead of schedule and $300m under budget."

With this new link, passengers will be able to connect with Liverpool CBD, through Leppington, Edmondson Park and Glenfield stations.

The new line will also connect passengers with T5 Cumberland Line, T2 South Line and T2 Airport Line at Glenfield, with the T2 South Line, T3 Bankstown Line and T5 Cumberland Line at Liverpool.

Australia’s Transport Minister Gladys Berejiklian said: "Air-conditioned trains will run on the new line every 30min from 5am to midnight, seven days a week, and will take less than 16min to travel to Glenfield or Liverpool where customers can connect with the CBD, Parramatta and the airport."

This four-year project has seen the installation of 53,000 rail sleepers, 31km of track and 100,000t of ballast and also created around 3,000 jobs a year during construction.

In addition, the project also included construction of 14 bridges and two newest stations at Leppington and Edmondson Park along with 1,250 parking spaces.
